Cape Town

There’s no shortage of options in the Cape. A quick google search will have you inundated with heaps of restaurants, activities and bars to pick from. Luckily for you, I’ve tried and tested my way through the city so that you don’t have to.

Cool off in Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay

Description

Start off your morning with a dip at Dalebrook tidal pool. It's the perfect spot for the kids to wander about in the shallow water while you catch a tan on the ricks. Take a stroll up to the Courtyard Cafe, the perfect shady spot to refuel with a good brekkie. After, pop across the road to one of many boutiques like Graydawn & Mmzurimamas for some stunning locally made summer essentials.

Green Point Park

Green Point

Description

People-watching on the Prom is great, until you just want quiet time. A walk through this park is my favourite way to escape the noise. Take a stroll through the 'biodiversity showcase' garden, with a fascinating array of indigenous plants. Say hi to the ducks plodding through the ponds or, if you're lucky, spot an otter mucking about in the stream. A super spot for kids to play on the jungle gyms and families to camp out on the picnic areas. The on-site cafe has plenty of snacks for kiddos.

This fun activity is for everyone and a great way to recoup and let your creative juices start flowing.

The Lawns

Camps Bay

Description

Set in the Kloof between Lions Head and Table Mountain lies this beautiful outdoor venue overlooking the Atlantic ocean. The best summer vibes and views. I love this spot at any time of the day - an early brunch or cocktails at sunset. Their scrumptious meals and wonderful views give you a great opportunity for a summer photo dump. Only warning: not all seating options are equal. I prefer the lounge sets at the top level (the best views & less packed).

Drink up De Waterkant

De Waterkant

Description

I'm a sucker for Taiwanese bubble tea in summer. The bright and eclectic Susu Bubble Tea is a cool and colourful destination in itself. But it doubles up as a perfect starting point from which to explore the fabulous neighbourhood, De Waterkant, on foot.

Arthurs Mini Super

Sea Point

Description

Arthur's Mini Superette is the antidote to pretentious Cape Town eateries. With lino flooring and no frills, diner-style seating, this friendly community deli-turn mini bar makes serving up a good time look effortless. My fave part? Their simplicity & versatility. The menu offers 'rare' classics like smiley brekkies and eggs & soldiers. Pop in after a Prom walk, or camp out & catch up with work with the best toasties in town. Dogs & tods welcome!

Be a city slicker

City Centre

Description

Have a lazy brunch in the shade of The Company Gardens Cafe. A beautiful inner-city oasis at the heart of South Africa's first garden. Perfect spot for kids to play while grownups unwind. There's so much to explore on foot in the vicinity - all air conditioned! The Iziko South African Museum houses a fascinating collection of important African exhibits. The planetarium is an immersive 360° cinema with daily space and science shows. The SANG art gallery is a must on any classic CT to-do list.

Cape Point Vineyards Market

Noordhoek

Description

I just love this space. Nestled between Noordhoek and the Chapman's Peak mountains. This beautiful winery by the sea hosts a lake-side market on their picnic lawns event Thursday from 4.30pm-8.30pm. Heaps of food trucks with delicious sushi, pizza, and more! There's a jungle gym for the kiddies to enjoy and plenty fantastic wines for you to try.

Art and About with One Day Africa

Woodstock

Description

My dear friend Sipho hosts unmissable street art experiences throughout the city. Take your pick from his various walking and cycling tours. A fun way to explore whole learning more about the local history and heritage. I love the fresh focus on the urban aspects of a city which favours its overly-refined, over-sanitised art scene. The inner city biking tours hosted every Saturday end at another one of my faves, Stellski Cafe in Bree St. Pop in and say hi to Megs and her colourful team.

Old Table Mountain Road

Old Table Mountain Road

Description

A summer evening stroll is a must. But trails like Lions Head or the Sea Point promenade can get packed in peak season. I love heading along the old Table Mountain Road. Set out beyond the cable car for a brisk stroll across the flat tar road. The perfect way for non-hikers to enjoy panoramic views of the city while covering some serious distance. End your journey with something cold and refreshing from TAP at Table Mountain - situated at the Lower Station of the Cableway.

Cape Town Helicopters

V&A Waterfront

Description

A really special way to see the city from a fresh perspective. A photographer's dream and high on my recommendation list for my clients visiting the city for the first time. A breath-taking way to better understand the layout of the land and take in just how rich Cape Town's natural offering is. My favourite package? The Two Oceans Tour by Cape Town Helicopter Tours. Leaving from the V&A, head all along the Cape Peninsula to Hout Bay, False Bay, and then head back over the city.

Clifton Fire Jams

2nd Beach

Description

Watch the fabulous fire dancers and flow artists from Fire Tribe playing on the beach at their monthly Fire Jams. These free access community gatherings generally happen once a month. Best part? You're welcome and encouraged to join in the fun! They start just after sunset and play until quiet time at 10pm. In a very Capetonian fashion, dates are never set long in advance. Make sure to check out their Insta & FB group for updates and details on the next events: @firetribe.
