Johannesburg
Whether you’re looking to upgrade from your makeshift office at the kitchen counter or you just want somewhere to escape to on a Wednesday when the gardening services come in with their weed eaters. These are my fave casual work spaces in the city.
August 2023Just a wonderful space to be ‑ especially in the outdoor section on cool but crisp winters morning in Joburg. Winters in the city are the best. Pair a clear sunny sky with a warm cuppa coffee ‑ there’s nothing quite like it. Perfect way to clear your head when you need to get some strategic planning down on paper.
I’ve not been here personally but it came highly recommended by some of my readers. Great for load shedding sessions when the power’s stopped but the deadlines haven’t. The setting looks great so rest assured it’s on my list to visit soon.
Sandton community library offers a quiet space for you to study or get work done in. I think either you’re a library person or you’re not. I, personally, love libraries. Walking around shelves jam packed with knowledge, the distinct smell of books and the non negotiable silent rule. It doesn’t matter where in the world you go‑ you’ll always be able to find a quiet haven in a local library.
My favourite location is in Melrose Arch. There’s a separate section in the back for when you’re needing to knuckle down and get some studying in or get work done. The location in Rosebank was another firm favourite amongst many of you. I especially enjoy the outdoor section during the hot summer months. But not a personal choice for getting work done ‑ it can be pretty distracting if you love people watching like I do.
I stumbled across this little gem when I was visiting the new Bank offices upstairs and just had to include it. It’s a separate company and run entirely as a resturant. But I loved the decor and setting and thought it was the perfect environment for catching up on emails between coffees or lunch time meetings.
I’m really not trying to list coffee chains here but the Seattle coffee inside the Exclusive Books at Hyde Park Corner is just a game changer. If you ever want to come say hi or meet me in IRL you’ll probably find me here, curled up with major mug of English breakfast tea and my laptop. Set in the exclusive books means you get that library feel and the INCREDIBLE smell of books all around you while you work. The vibe is quiet but not too isolated so you can mission away and get lots done.
This relatively new location is a remote working haven. Coffee on tap, super fast wifi and a lighthearted vibe to keep your workload flowing freely. I’m a sucker for a their hot chocolates on those days when things are just feeling a bit dull. Parking is super easy too. It’s just around the corner for the urban escape and that cute health food grocer.
