Italy
My famiglia is Roman, we are from Rieti! Rome is a big city so load your maps before you leave the house. The metro is safe but rather avoid taking the metro alone late at night. If there are two of you, it’s ok. Safe to walk around day and night.
July 2023Pinsa is a style of hand-pressed pizza dough that has been a part of Roman artisan baking for over a century. The word Pinsa derived from 'pinsere', which means 'push the dough by hand'.
They have a beautiful array of Italian cured meats & cheese from the areas in and around Roma.
Our cousin has been going to this ‘hole‑in‑the‑wall’ Gelateria for decades. The shop doesn’t look amazing but trust us the gelato is!
We were in time for the artichoke season where the Jewish quarter in Rome really celebrate this magical vegetable. Carciofi alla giudia is our best, the leaves are spread out and represent a flower then deep fried and served with salt and lemon.
A sacred restaurant which has been open for many years. We found it by chance and we were treated like royalty. A traditional restaurant that serves the old school dishes like Cacio e pepe, carbonara & all amatriciana.
Italian candy store next to the Spanish steps. An array of products mostly made in Italy.
In the vibrant area of trastevere. Amazing pizza & Roman faves.
Nonno Lello was from this little town. Rieti’s claim to fame of this is that is it ‘centro d’Italia’ ~ the dead center of Italy 🇮🇹 We always joke that means we’re friends with everyone no drama for us with regards to North or South. Many magnificent famous food dishes come from the Rieti region. Alla Amatriciana is a beloved pasta dish {made with guanciale, tomato & pecorino} which comes from a commune called Amatrice. In Rieti food is like a religion, good quality is a must.
Suppli are Roman deep fried risotto balls made with a hidden hunk of melty mozzarella in the middle ~ not arancini! We’re Roman! Try the classic which is tomato sauce & mozarella but there are also the holy trinity sauces made into suppli Carbonara ~ All’amatriciana ~ Cacio e Peppe.
You can eat The Roman trilogy at this restaurant ~ Carbonara ~ All’amatriciana ~ Cacio e Peppe made with traditional tonnarelli Spaghetti alla chitarra from Abruzzo region.
Try a Maritozzo & cappucino for a true Roman breakfast. They are famous for their maritozzo and they even have savoury ones! They also have a beautiful Salumeria {deli & restaurant} and Antico Forno {bakery specializing in bread}
Old school bakery that makes the best tartaletta di frutta {fruit tart with Italian custard and fragoline wild strawberries} and also known for the Roman treat Maritozzo.
Elevated Roman cuisine featuring the classics but with a little extra. The artichoke, guanciale and pecorino flan was insanely good!
Worth the hype ~ he finally put Roman pizza Al taglio and as proud Roman’s it made us so happy! Our advice is stick to the pizza. It’s outside of rome so take the nearest metro to ‘Panificio Bonci’.
Book online and jump the queue.
The grand Colosseum is all year beauty. We bought tickets from this site - www.coopculture.it 🇮🇹 The easiest, cheapest way to skip the queue and discover this magnificent historical site. Make sure to see Gates of the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Imperial Forum.
Next to the fountain is an old pan selling roasted chestnuts.
